Abstract

In this paper two dimensional model of augmented wind turbine is analyzed. First a mesh study is performed for open rotor to obtain a suitable mesh size. It appears that fine mesh gives accurate results for open rotor. Then a stator is placed around open rotor due to which an increase in coefficient of torque and pressure is observed. Obtained results are compared with the previous obtained results in order to gain confidence over computational model. Later inlet velocity is varied in steps such that it follows a sine curve to accompany the fluctuating nature of wind. Due to varying nature of inlet velocity, varying torque is obtained at output which is then applied to asynchronous generator modeled in Simulink with rectifier and inverter to get a constant voltage at output. Finally inlet velocity is raised to double and half of its present value. Results shows that even at changing inlet velocity maximum coefficient of torque is obtained at the same tip speed ratio which further implies that maximum torque coefficient is independent of incident wind speed.
