Abstract

The existence of slums harms the city, the environment, and humans where the cleanliness, environmental facilities, and aesthetics do not meet the feasibility standard. Batam City has 66 points of slums location, one of which is Tanjung Riau. Tanjung Riau is one of the coastal settlements in Batam and has an area of slums on the water of 4.6 hectares, this is very unfortunate because Tanjung Riau has the potential as a water tourism village that greatly supports the development of urban tourism of Batam. For this reason, it is deemed necessary to find out the pull factors behind the occurrence of slums in Tanjung Riau so that this problem can be resolved from the root, not just to beautify the area without fixing the root of the problem. Descriptive qualitative is chosen for this research to describe and analyze existing phenomena and real situations in the research area by using Root Cause Analysis (RCA) method. The research data collection is through observation and documentation combining with walkthrough analysis technique. The results from this study shown 2 (two) main factors as pull factors of slums in Tanjung Riau coastal settlement, namely: migration of people from outside the island who come to Batam with the attraction of looking for work and uncontrolled development due to the location of Tanjung Riau which is has its dock is an attraction for building houses without thinking about quality and density.
