A Brief Survey on Various Techniques in Image Enhancement

Abstract

In computer vision applications, image enhancement techniques are used as a pre-processing step in segmentation, object detection, and recognition.Image enhancement has been identified as one of the most essential vision applications due to its capacity to improve image visibility. The primary goal of image enhancement is to pull out hidden detail in an image or to boost contrast in a low-contrast image. It gives us a lot of options for boosting the visual quality of images. The images which are taken in low-light conditions, the images suffering from poor contrast and noise, is not suitable for viewing and for further analysis. There is a need of improving such images especially in the field of medical, satellite, industries, entertainment, defence etc. There are so many techniques for improving the images ranging from simple techniques like histogram techniques to advanced techniques by using different concepts in artificial intelligence, machine learning etc. This paper presents the existing image improvement approaches that are often employed nowadays.
