Abstract

This paper describes a multiethnic area with segregation and integration in one urban settlement area in Semarang City. Kampung is part of cities in Indonesia that need to be preserved because Urban Villages can have characteristics/uniqueness in human relations, namely familiarity, and kinship, where these characteristics are increasingly lost in urban life. Ethnic Chinese began to come and settle around this area then the influence of trading activities multiplied. Kampung Islam is also among these settlements, making trade a source of income. The observation is in the Urban Village area on Jalan Mataram, close to the "Old City Heritage City" Semarang Lama City. This study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis by looking at the historical elements and the causes of the emergence of these settlements. This study shows that the relationship between ethnic groups in the village in Semarang is a relationship where one benefits, the other does not benefit, but it does not matter or is often referred to as symbiotic mutualism and commensalism symbiosis.
