Abstract

A laboratory study has been conducted to examine the impact of incorporating steel fibres on the mechanical properties of concrete containing nano silica and micro silica. Different dosages of nano silica (1%, 2%, 3%) and micro silica (5%, 10%, 15%) have been tried and the optimum combination (based on trials) has been found to be 1% nano silica and 10% micro silica. Steel fibres were added in volume fractions of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. The basic mechanical properties investigated include cube compressive strength, cylinder compressive strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. The test results show that concrete containing nano silica and micro silica performed better than control concrete and that fibre inclusion further improved the performance of concrete.
