Abstract

Gusset plate is a main element in the steel connections of the truss joints. This paper presents a numerical study to investigate the behavior of the gusset plate in the connections of the lower chord joints consisting of four members in a N-shape steel truss, which are connected by the non-pretentioned bearing type bolts. Finite Element method was used to examine the stress distribution of the gusset plate connection for a total of 57 truss connection models. The finite element models were validated using the results from previous experimental test. Parametric study was carried out on gusset plates. The parameters to be studied were the gusset plate thickness and geometry. The results of the analysis indicates that the load capacity of the gusset plate increases when its thickness increases. Also, the dimensions of the gusset plate have a minoreffect on the load capacity where it decreases when the gusset plate breadth increases.
