Mitigation of Ferranti Effect in Transmission Systems Using Closed Loop Control of STATCOM

Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis and mitigation of Ferranti Effect in the transmission system with closed loop control of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). STATCOM is a shunt compensation device which is connected in parallel to load bus. Test system is built with long distributed transmission lines with different line lengths during no load and lightly loaded conditions. This Ferranti effect is observed in transmission system which is abnormal effect and it is mitigated with STATCOM. The closed loop control of the device is developed and simulated for the case study in this article. The test system is simulated in MATLAB Simulink environment without and with STATCOM. The simulation results have been presented in this article which proves the effectiveness of closed loop control of compensator on mitigation of Ferranti effect is excellent for both no load and lightly loaded conditions.
