Abstract

Background:

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted our lives, in aspects like education and the economy, as we know it. Governments during lockdown have issued stay-at-home directives, and as a result, colleges and universities remained shut in India for over 7 months for physical classrooms. Hence, E-Learning has become a key component in the continuity of education. The present study aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on online education.

Aim:

This survey aims to assess the impact on students of science stream in accessing their academics daily via E-Learning and it’s availability due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Materials and Method:

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 (50 Medical, 50 Dental, 50 Engineering) studentsin Tamilnadu based on the simple random sampling method in Tamil Nadu to assess the availability of E-Learning for accessing academics daily during COVID-19 pandemic. A 17 closed ended and 2 open-ended questionnaire regarding impact of e-learning, network connectivity problems, lack of interaction, lack of practical sessions was distributed among the students and their responses were recorded. The data were analyzed and tabulated using descriptive statistics and chi square test. P< 0.05 considered to be statistically significant.

Results:

Conclusion:

There is huge scope of making E-learning as a tool to provide education to a much larger audience and students to take benefit from the materials which are easily accessible. One factor to support it is availability of smartphone and devices among students and the acceptance of learning via online methods among major universities. This E-learning is not a new concept but the pandemic forced the students to take up E-learning and it is easily accessible with newer tools every other month by developers and highly praised among the students whose course were strict to physical classroom based up until now.
