Abstract

In part-I, we discussed the comparison of wear and friction characteristics of pure Al and Al–Al2O3 Metal Matrix Nano Composites manufactured by non-contact cavitation method by mixing 1.5 wt.% of Al2O3nano particles of 10nm, 50nm and 80nm sizes respectively with pure Al and subjected to dry sliding wear tests under constant loads and speeds. But, in this experiment, the same specimens are subjected to load and speed applied and increased in steps and the results are compared with those obtained when specimens are subjected to constant loads and speeds. Comparison of dry sliding wear test results and microscopic analysis of worn out surfaces showthat MMNCs have superior wear and friction resistance than purealuminium. Wear is least in case of MMNC reinforced with 10nm alumina particles.Wear rate increaseswith increase in load, sliding velocity and particlesize. Resistance to friction decreases with increase in load, velocity and particle size. Abrasion and delamination are the kinds of wear detected in MMNCs.
