Abstract

High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest video compression standard for high-resolution video content. HEVC makes use of prediction to exploit redundancies in the signal and therefore achieve high compression efficiency. In particular, the Intra-Picture prediction block predicts a block in the current frame using the reference information from neighboring blocks in the same frame. However, it comes with the tremendous encoding complexity increase. It is necessary to decrease the computation complexity of the coder. In this paper, an algorithm for mode decisions based on intra prediction has been proposed. This algorithm calculates the texture complexity of the coding unit and sets the rational threshold to select the size of the coding unit fast; then, a modified search process is used to decrease the number of candidate modes of prediction. Finally, early termination for rate-distortion optimized quantization (RDOQ) is used for Intra prediction. The proposed algorithm reduce about 40.9% encoding time.
