Waste Managing in Chandigarh: An Exploratory Study of Waste Collection Process in the Planned City

Abstract

Managing urban waste is a problem of increasingly magnitude in developing and developed nations. The recent phenomenon of mounting heaps of garbage and waste content mark the footprint of man every waste prominent geographical entity. This study focuses on the need for urban waste management as exemplified by the Chandigarh Waste disposal strategy. Many of the urban dwelling units in towns and cities in the Northern parts of India are using varying methods of waste disposal. The Municipal Corporations are facing a glut of overloaded landfills, choked sewers and underground drainage. In some cases the sewerage has seeped into the underground water table as well causing several fatal health situations. The researcher has studied the prevalent practices of garbage disposal and the lacunae in effective garbage disposal of Chandigarh city region. In this paper, some of the major aspects of Chandigarh’s Waste disposal are being focussed upon. The study has tremendous scope for urban settlements in the Northern parts of the country especially in terms of mitigating waste, waste management and effective waste disposal.
