The Architectural Integration of the Interior Space System

Abstract

The concept of integration is of pronounced relevance in the architectural discourse that is concerned in particular with the practical and executive aspect of architecture, as it is focused around defining the basic building's systems which are the exterior, interior, structural, utilitarian, and – the recently added- site systems. Studies showed integration cases between these systems, with attention directed towards efficiency and economy. The current research is particularly concerned with the integration of the internal space system with the rest of the systems in the building. It acknowledges that the realized internal space is the essence of architecture and its substantial subject, and achieving the architectural integration of interior space is a fundamental goal for the designer. The research presents the viewpoint that the integration of internal space system should include the visual aesthetics that brings out the concept of integration to a more comprehensive level in architecture, an aspect that has not been adequately covered so far. Thus, the research aimed to build a theoretical framework for the integration of the internal space system with the rest of the building's systems in the visual aesthetic aspect. Such a framework helps in reading and evaluating the strength level of achieving visual integration with other building systems in the various spaces in addition to being a reference tool for designing an integrative interior space.

To reach its goal the research uses an analytical comparative approach in reviewing the literature that dealt with the concept of integration in architecture and the theories of integration of building systems. Then it investigates the aspects of interior architecture that can be observed in space, to derive the variables of a theoretical framework for the visual and aesthetic integrative relations of the internal space system with the rest of the building's systems. The research then moves to examining several architectural examples of interior spaces of houses to illustrate the functioning of its variables.
