Abstract

Scour downstream the hydraulic structures is considered one of the most dangerous problem facing designers of the hydraulic structures. The local scour phenomenon downstream multi-vents regulators may endanger the safety of the structure when the necessary precautions are not considered during operation. This study focused on the action of double vertical gates on both the flow characteristics and scour hole parameters. The proposed model of the double vertical gates distributed the passing discharge via two vents, in which the lower discharge passed under the lower gate, while the upper discharge wasthe passing discharge between the two vertical gates. The experimental model was investigated under different relative gate openings of 0.25, 0.50, 1.00 and 1.50, in addition the lower gate only case. The relative gate opening of 0.25 showed maximum values of the relative energy dissipation and minimum values of the relative scour depth. The relative energy loss increased by 36.07% and the relative maximum scour depth decreased by 5.55% compared to the lower gate only case. The measured results matched closely with the estimated results from the developed empirical equations.
