Abstract

The demand of electricity is increasing continuously. There is interconnection of various power networks. But due to random load and generation changes there are low frequency oscillations in the power system. This effects the safe, reliable and stable operation of the system. These oscillations must be damped out otherwise it will affect the power transfer capacity of the system. It also endangers the system operation and make the system unstable. If oscillations are not controlled, they will grow and cause blackout. In the proposed work the linearized model of the power system is developed including various components like generator, exciter, Power System Stabilizer (PSS)and load. The PSS is designed using two techniques which are Pole Assignment and Phase Compensation due to which the stability of the system is improved. Eigen value analysis is carried out to find the various modes of oscillation of the system. The variation of rotor angle, speed with the two techniques is plotted and analyzed.
