Abstract

The Ultra - Wide Band (UWB) is progressing rapidly as a wireless communication technology for a high data rate applications. In this paper, different structures of E-shaped slot microstrip antennas are presented, as candidates for miniaturized UWB antennas. The dimensions of the E-shaped antenna structures are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) optimization techniques. The optimization algorithms were developed using MATLAB, then linked to the CST Microwave Studio for antenna simulation. Simulation results show that, Double E-Shaped Slot Antenna (DESA) gives a bandwidth of 3.15 GHz and dimensions of 14.6 mm x 18.25 mm (size reduction of 60 % with respect to the reference antenna). To validate the simulation and optimization concept, the DESA was implemented and measured.  The measured results of the optimized antenna validate a good compatibility between the simulation and the measurements.
