Abstract

Drainage of agricultural land is one of the pillars of the sustainability of agricultural production and protection of land degradation. Therefore, drains hydraulic problems, as deposition of sediments results in their efficiency reduction and ability to the free drainage of cultivated Land. Also, sedimentation results in drain cross section morphological, the spread of aquatic weeds, and wrong application of maintenance methods consider the most important hydraulic problems that affect the efficiency of drains, which leads to the existence of economic, environmental, and social influent. Therefore, improving hydraulic efficiency of drains lead to a reduction in water loss. To achieve the objective of this paper, three drains were selected, which are the Sheikh Telada, Tribal Saleh, and Mokhtar drains in Minya Governorate.  Several field measurements were executed on several cross-sections along each drain length. Based on the indicator groups, the evaluation of the hydraulic performance is presented to judge the efficiency of each drain. These indicators can be applied on similar drains suffering from the same hydraulic problems in a similar studied zone. Recommended practical solutions are suggested, which consequently led to improve the hydraulic efficiency and the environmental status of each drain.
