Abstract

The voltage stability can be assessed accurately using line and load stability indices. These indices can either reveal the critical bus or line of a power system. The said indices plays vital role in identifying the most critical n-1 contingencies. This article focuses on size and location optimization of shunt and series compensation. Outage priority ranking is found with Line Stability Index Lmn, and FVSI.

The general criterion of identification of most critical bus is maximum value of line indices is used for identifying the severe most contingency. The optimal capacity is obtained in two different ways, one is Using Synchronous Phase Modifier (SPM) at the most critical load bus and the other one is reactive power loss and stability indices based iterative technique for both shunt and series and coordination of both compensations. The PSO is also used to compute optimal location and capacity of shunt compensator in IEEE 14 Bus and 30 bus systems.

Voltage stability of the system has been enhanced with optimal placed compensators with best capacity.  Comparison has been made for two methods of finding optimal capacity and subsequent effect on voltage stability Improvement and losses reduction.
