Abstract

Congestion within WSNs is one of the big challenges. A significant number of low-cost, feature-rich sensor nodes installed in WSNs in areas that need to be monitored to make sense of the monitoring area of the network. Because of the resource limitation of sensor nodes, congestion occurs when the traffic load of the node exceeds the capacity available. Congestion can cause serious problems, such as high loss of packets and energy consumption, and low throughput, which is hugely detrimental to WSN performance. In this paper, an efficient congestion control method is proposed to avoid packet loss, throughput and energy inefficiency problems. It considers the congestion at node-level and sink-level. The mathematical model used to prevent congestion, increase network lifetime, and reduce packet loss and data transmission delay.
