Abstract

With the increase in demand for power generation, there is an interest building for renewable energy generation due to their advantages like clean and harmless energy generation. The performance analysis of differential evaluation (DE) algorithm based PI controller for MMC based shunt Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) of the power network is thoroughly investigated. A modular multilevel converter operated, with PDPWM and PODPWM schemes, through PI controller is developed for design and control analysis. The design problem is framed as a minimization problem and DE is employed to explore for optimal controller gains. The steady-state power transfer is improved and the voltage profile is enhanced using MMC based reactive shunt STATCOM with DE optimized PI controller. The system has been tested under symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults. The MMC- STATCOM is tested with PD and POD techniques. The PI controller gains are tuned with differential algorithm. The responses are proved that the designed system is effective in reactive power compensation and THD reduction with PDPWM technique compared to PODPWM scheme.
