Abstract

This report looks into the possible reuse of paper sludge in construction materials. The paper sludge extract from the TNPL has been studied for Physico-chemical and engineering properties. The experiments were carried out in compliance with the specification codes of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to determine the suitability of sludge for structural and non-structural applications by partial substitution of up to 30 percent cement. For structural applications, the cement-sludge samples failed to reach the strength required. The strength and other characteristics of non-structural materials such as hollow, solid and pavement blocks are met by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It is presumed that in the manufacture of non-structural building materials, the replacement of paper sludge for cement, up to a limit of 30 percent, could be feasible. As the next step in reuse, comprehensive leaching capability and economic feasibility studies need to be undertaken.
