Abstract

Image compression plays a major role in many important and diverse applications. It reduces the memory required to store the image. It also reduces the bandwidth required to transfer the image. In numerous applications like the archival storage, medical imaging, processing of satellite imagery and technical drawings error free compression is only the acceptable means of data reduction. Skeleton Representation is an important aspect in image processing. The present work proposes a new Error free compression i.e., Octagonal Disk Encoder and Decoder algorithm, using skeletonization method. Skeleton points are obtained using Octagonal disk. These skeleton points are used to represent the shape of an object. The compression algorithm uses these skeleton points and reconstructs the original image. The present method is applied on different types of images that represent different shape of an object.
