Abstract

The Digital India initiative of the Narendra Modi government spearheaded the agenda to fight various forms of social injustice and poverty. The new approach to battling poverty, corruption, inaccessibility to health services and education, women security, unemployment has witnessed a tangible change in the quality of life of people. The penetration of digital services to rural areas through the internet certainly created a positive change in society. The impact has been so much that today almost every household has at least one bank account to access government schemes. The electronic delivery of services has also remarkably changed the reach of services to the beneficiaries. The difference between the lower and upper economic strata of the society in terms of internet availability and accessibility has been bridged to a considerable extent. The present paper is an attempt to unfold the progress achieved in the social sector using digital technology. The Chinese experiment is also referred to as drawing pertinent lessons for the Indian context.
