Abstract

Advancements in technology today has made Internet of Things (IoT) a fastest growing research domain. Through its rapid development, it is changing the life style of the universe by connecting various smart devices such as sensors, microprocessors, networks etc. and the data sharing between the devices is happening through routing techniques. IoT needs energy efficient routing protocols to report the inadequate energy concern with regard to nodes. Even though there are few protocols available to offer the minimum energy cost path to achieve routing of data packets, they might end up with quick exhaustion of energy of nodes and eventual interruption of networks when large number of packets are transmitted. Thus, most of the IoT applications experience Low power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) where nodes have inadequate memory, processing competence and power. To overcome this, a protocol called Energy Aware Routing has been extended in this paper to perform energy aware and efficient routing by load distribution in IoT applications which employs several lower cost paths for routing data packets.

In this paper, Energy Aware Protocol for Internet of Things (EARI) has been proposed. Since Quality of Service (QoS) is a main concern in IoT applications, they are allocated priority levels by giving highest priority to most sensitive applications and are served with finest QoS employing huge number of nodes for routing data. Probability mass function is used to choose the nodes with maximum resources to meet QoS conditions and need minimal energy costs for data packet transmission. Experiments are carried out using NS3 Simulator. The proposed mechanism is compared with Low Loss Energy Aware Routing Protocol (LLEAP). The results demonstrate the proposed technique reveals effective load distribution (increase by 9%) and a little increase in the consumption of total energy compared to LLEAP.
