Abstract

Due to industrialization, industries are emitting an enormous amount of waste material which causes environmental problems and results in air and water pollution. One of the major problems faced by industries in the dumping of solid waste which can be overcome by the utilization of these materials like Red mud, Fly ash, GGBS, Iron ore tailing etc. as construction materials. Considering Red mud as a base material, aluminium industry facing a major problem in dumping, which contains a very high percentage of alkalinity as it is having the potential to pollute the environment. Fly ash and GGBS are the by-products of coal and steel making respectively, contains a high percentage of toxins and heavy metals. This concern brings us the idea about sustainability of materials. By using red mud, fly ash and GGBS with all basic tests like sieve analysis, specific gravity, Consistency limits of individual material, Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) and Maximum Dry Density (MDD) of compositions were also determined and finally California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and Unconfined Compressive Strength test (UCS) were conducted to know the strength of the given material with different composition of 90% -10%, 80%-20%, 70-30%, 50%-50%.  After performing all the test, the comparison of red mud with fly ash and red mud with GGBS was made and concluded with which material is more feasible in subgrade as a road construction material.
