Abstract

An impact attenuator is a device used to protect the vehicle from damage during a collision thereby preventing the occurrence of injury to the driver. Though Cars have crumpled zone for absorbing impact energy but in additionally the crumpled zone require systems to absorb this impact energy more efficiently, thus saving the passengers. Our research is based on the design of such new device known as impact attenuator, which is designed for frontal collisions in cars. It is therefore necessary to install a device which is capable of protecting from such frontal collisions at high speed by absorbing all the huge energy generated during collision. At the same time to reduce the development and testing costs of a new safety design, it is recommendable to use computational crash simulations for early evaluation of safety behaviour under vehicle impact test. We have successfully built such a system in terms of CAD- modelling in CATIA V5R20 and have obtained positive simulation results in ANSYS, is presented in this paper.
