Abstract

Calibration is a crucial process on industrial and scientific activities. It’s necessary to ensure that the measurements are up to the standards. Department of Science and Technology is mandated to perform calibration services. They use a manually operated, proving tank based volumetric method. They offer calibration to fuel lorries, which is a large fuel vessel and due to its large size, calibration takes time.  Using electronic and mechanical design approach, the group developed an electronic automation and piping system. CAD development tool was used to develop the virtual prototype of the piping, and Visual Studio was used to create the graphic user interface. Arduino platform was used for hardware interfacing. The design was evaluated separately using T-test and Z-test. The mechanical design was evaluated through flow simulation and manual computations, while the electronic hardware was evaluated by using a small prototype for actual data gathering. From the evaluation methods, the new system is said to have higher output flowrate of 10.981 liters/minute versus 5.55 liters/minute of the existing system. 0.5% accuracy was obtained from the flowmeter. The Graphic User Interface and the electronic system was also proven to be reliable. Given those, the new system is an improvement over the existing.
