Abstract

:A denial-of-service attack in which a compromised node loses packets instead of forwarding them is known as a black-hole attack. The black-hole attack is very tough to distinguish and thwart. This form of attack can be persistently deployed on to attack Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). Each node in MANET works cooperatively to communicate with each other but some compromised nodes try to agitate the network by imposing malicious activities like dropping, forging, and modifying data packets. A black hole node in the network will broadcast that it has the shortest route towards a goal and divert all the traffic through the compromised node.

This paper provides a solution to mitigate the black-hole attack, which is performed on the network layer. In this approach the loyalty of the node is tested using the loyalty table and based on the loyalty of each node, the black hole nodeswill be identified. These black-hole nodes start to drop the packets instead of forwarding them and will be eliminated from the communicating environment. To analyze the impact of these black-hole nodes, the reactive routing protocol AODV is modified and the performance of the routing protocol is evaluated using various performance metrics.
