Using Blockchain Technology to Create a Secure Digital Voting System

Abstract

In every democratic country, the security of an election is of high importance. There is widespread mistrust towards the government in today's world, making the democratic process of voting more critical than ever. Technology such as the internet has a great impact on many aspects of our life. It leads to innovation and creativity. One of the significant innovations is Blockchain which is the keystone of crypto-currencies. It is a game-changer for many of the existing or emerging technologies. Blockchain technologies offer a variety of applications benefiting from sharing economic data. One of the applications of the Blockchain is an e-voting scheme, and the objective of such a scheme would be to run and support a voting scheme that is fair, open, and independently verifiable. This paper proposes a potential new e-voting scheme that utilizes the Blockchain as a transparent ballot box. This paper includes the requirements of building an electronic voting system. It also highlights the advantages and limitations of using Blockchain as a service from a practical perspective in both development and usage contexts.
